My Journey on the Machulo La Trek – A Local Guide’s Perspective
My name is Kaleem Ali, and I am a local guide from Machulo with years of experience leading trekkers through the stunning landscapes of Baltistan. Among the many incredible trekking routes in this region, Machulo La Trek holds a special place in my heart. It offers breathtaking views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum. Having led many adventurers through this route, I am excited to share my personal experience of this remarkable journey.
Getting to Machulo
The journey to Machulo, my home village in Baltistan, starts with a flight to Skardu from Islamabad. The flight itself is an unforgettable experience, offering mesmerizing aerial views of the Karakoram range. Upon landing, we drive along the mighty Indus River, passing through charming valleys and picturesque landscapes before finally reaching Machulo village, the starting point of our trek. The drive from Skardu to Machulo takes approximately 6-7 hours, covering around 120 km.
Felix Guest House – A Comfortable Stay
Before beginning the trek, most of my guests stay at Felix Guest House, a well-known and comfortable accommodation in Machulo. The hospitality here is unmatched, with traditional Balti meals and cozy rooms. From here, trekkers can acclimatize and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains before setting off on the adventure.
The Trek Begins
After spending a restful night in the village, we start our trek early in the morning. The path takes us through lush green meadows, narrow trails, and some steep ascents. The fresh mountain air and the sight of snow-capped peaks keep everyone energized. As a guide, I love sharing stories about our region, its history, and the legendary mountaineers who have walked these paths before us. The trek from Machulo village to Machulo Broq takes around 5-6 hours of hiking, covering roughly 10 km with gradual altitude gain.
Machulo Broq – A Pastoral Paradise
One of the most fascinating stops along the way is Machulo Broq, a high-altitude summer settlement where local villagers bring their livestock, including cows and goats. Here, families produce butter, yogurt, and cheese using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. The atmosphere is peaceful, with the sound of cowbells echoing through the valley. Trekkers often enjoy tasting fresh dairy products, and it’s always a joy to see visitors interact with the warm and hospitable locals.
The Ascent to Machulo La
Reaching Machulo La (pass) is both challenging and rewarding. The final ascent is steep, and at times, the thin air makes it difficult to breathe. However, the effort is worth it as we stand atop the pass, taking in the panoramic view of the Karakoram giants. Seeing K2 standing majestically among other peaks is a moment that never gets old for me. No matter how many times I guide trekkers here, the beauty of this place continues to amaze me. The trek from Machulo Broq to Machulo La takes around 4-5 hours, covering another 8 km with a steep incline.
Camping in the Wilderness
After soaking in the views, we descend to a suitable campsite for the night. The silence of the mountains, interrupted only by the occasional gust of wind, creates a magical atmosphere. We gather around a small fire, sharing stories and sipping hot tea under a sky filled with countless stars.
Exploring Hushe Valley
After completing the Machulo La Trek, I always recommend trekkers explore Hushe Valley, another stunning destination in the Karakoram. Hushe is a gateway to many famous trekking routes, including the trek to Gondogoro La and the base camps of K2 and Masherbrum. Some must-visit spots in Hushe Valley include:
- Thalle La Trek – A scenic trek offering breathtaking views of the Hushe Valley.
- Masherbrum Base Camp – The base camp of the mighty Masherbrum peak (7,821m).
- K6 & K7 Base Camp – A relatively less explored but stunning trek leading to the base of two remarkable peaks, K6 (7,282m) and K7 (6,934m).
- Haldi Cones – A dramatic rock formation that attracts rock climbers and adventure seekers from around the world.
The Return Journey
The next day, we begin our descent back to Machulo village. The way down feels much easier, and we take our time to admire the beauty around us. Wildflowers, glacial streams, and the warm hospitality of my people make this trek even more special for visitors. The return trek from Machulo La to Machulo village takes approximately 6-7 hours.
Exploring Nangma Valley – A Hidden Wonderland
For those who still have the energy and spirit for another adventure, I always recommend visiting Nangma Valley, one of the most scenic and lesser-known trekking destinations in Baltistan. Located near Kanday village in the Hushe region, Nangma Valley is a paradise for rock climbers, nature lovers, and trekkers seeking solitude.
The trek to Nangma Valley takes around 4-5 hours from Kanday village, covering approximately 10 km through lush meadows and alongside glacial streams. The valley is surrounded by dramatic granite spires, including the famous Amin Brakk, also known as the “Great Tower,” which attracts climbers from around the world. The campsite in Nangma Valley is one of the most breathtaking spots, offering a panoramic view of the towering rock formations and a sky full of stars at night.
This short yet rewarding trek is perfect for those who want to experience the untouched beauty of Baltistan without undertaking a strenuous high-altitude journey.
Final Thoughts
As a local guide, I take immense pride in showcasing the beauty of Machulo La and the Karakoram to adventurers from around the world. This trek is perfect for those who seek solitude, raw beauty, and an authentic trekking experience in Pakistan’s mountains. Unlike commercialized trails, Machulo La remains a hidden gem, offering an untouched and serene landscape.
For any trekker looking to witness the grandeur of K2 without the extreme challenges of climbing, this trek is highly recommended. I have guided many people through these trails, but each time, I feel the same excitement and love for my homeland.
If you ever dream of standing before the world’s greatest peaks, Machulo La and Nangma Valley await – and I would be honored to guide you on this journey!
