TREK AL CAMPO BASE DEL K2 Y PASO GONDOGORO LA
The K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Pass Trek in Pakistan is one of the most spectacular high-altitude trekking adventures in the world. Located in the mighty Karakoram Range of Gilgit-Baltistan, this unforgettable journey takes you across the legendary Baltoro Glacier, into the breathtaking mountain amphitheatre of Concordia, to the base of K2 (8,611 m), the world’s second-highest mountain, and finally over the dramatic Gondogoro La Pass (5,585 m) into the beautiful Hushe Valley.
Organized by Machulo Treks & Tours Pakistan, this trek combines remote mountain landscapes, challenging glacier walks, traditional Balti culture and some of the finest mountain views on Earth. It is an excellent choice for experienced trekkers seeking a genuine adventure in the heart of the Karakoram.
The adventure begins in Islamabad, followed by a scenic flight to Skardu, weather permitting. Skardu is the main gateway to the high mountains of Baltistan. From here, we travel by jeep through Shigar Valley and the Braldu River Valley to Askole, the traditional starting point for the K2 Base Camp Trek.
Leaving Askole behind, we begin our trek through a remote mountain landscape of rocky trails, glacial streams and towering granite peaks. The route passes through camping areas such as Jhola, Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas and Goro II before reaching Concordia.
Along the way, you will enjoy impressive views of the Trango Towers, Masherbrum, Broad Peak and other famous peaks of the Karakoram. As we progress deeper into the mountains, the immense Baltoro Glacier becomes the main feature of the landscape, creating a unique trekking experience far from roads, towns and modern facilities.
One of the greatest highlights of the journey is Concordia, a spectacular meeting point of glaciers surrounded by some of the world’s highest mountains. Here, the scale and beauty of the Karakoram become truly unforgettable.
From Concordia, we continue towards K2 Base Camp along the Godwin-Austen Glacier. Reaching the base-camp area beneath K2 is a memorable achievement for trekkers who dream of seeing this legendary mountain up close.
Depending on the itinerary, weather and trail conditions, the journey may also include a visit to Broad Peak Base Camp. The surrounding landscape offers incredible opportunities for photography, mountain exploration and experiencing the remote wilderness of the Karakoram.
The Gondogoro La Pass crossing is the most challenging and adventurous part of this trek. Instead of returning to Askole along the Baltoro Glacier, we continue towards Ali Camp before making an early start for the ascent to Gondogoro La.
At approximately 5,585 metres, the pass offers extraordinary panoramic views of K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II and the surrounding Karakoram peaks when the weather is clear.
The crossing involves steep snow and ice, glacier travel and the use of fixed ropes where required. After reaching the top, we descend towards Khuspang and continue through the Gondogoro Valley towards Hushe village.
This section requires good physical fitness, suitable equipment, careful acclimatization and experienced local mountain support. Safe passage depends on weather, snow conditions, the state of fixed ropes and the team’s assessment. If conditions are unsafe, the itinerary may need to change.
After crossing Gondogoro La, the scenery gradually changes from the high glaciers and rocky landscapes of the upper Karakoram to the greener mountain valleys of Baltistan.
The trail leads through remote camping areas and mountain scenery towards Hushe village, a traditional Balti settlement known for its mountaineering heritage and local hospitality. From Hushe, we travel by jeep back to Skardu, completing one of the most rewarding trekking journeys in northern Pakistan.
This final section offers a different perspective on the Karakoram and a chance to experience the culture and landscapes of the communities that live among these mountains.
The K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek is a strenuous high-altitude adventure suitable for physically fit trekkers with previous multi-day trekking experience. The route includes long walking days, rocky trails, glacier moraine, camping at high elevations and limited access to facilities.
Crossing Gondogoro La is significantly more demanding than the standard K2 Base Camp Trek. Snow and ice travel, fixed ropes, steep slopes and rapidly changing weather make this section a serious mountain undertaking.
Trekkers should prepare with regular cardiovascular exercise, strength training and long hikes before departure. Appropriate mountaineering equipment, proper acclimatization and experienced guides are essential. The trek is not a technical ascent of K2, but the pass crossing requires additional mountain skills and careful safety planning.
At Machulo Treks & Tours Pakistan (MTTP), we organize trekking and adventure journeys throughout Baltistan and the wider Karakoram region. As a locally based tour operator, we understand the region’s mountain routes, local communities and the practical arrangements required for remote trekking.
