The K2 Base Camp Trek in Pakistan is one of the world’s most spectacular high-altitude trekking adventures, taking you deep into the heart of the mighty Karakoram Range in Gilgit-Baltistan. This legendary journey leads through remote mountain valleys, across the magnificent Baltoro Glacier, and into Concordia, one of the most breathtaking mountain amphitheatres on Earth, before reaching the base of K2 (8,611 m), the world’s second-highest mountain.
Organized by Machulo Treks & Tours Pakistan, this unforgettable trek offers an opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the Karakoram alongside a knowledgeable local team. From the dramatic granite towers of the Trango group to the vast glacier landscapes of Goro II and the spectacular mountain views at Concordia, every stage of the journey reveals a new perspective on northern Pakistan’s extraordinary wilderness.
The adventure usually begins in Islamabad, followed by a scenic flight to Skardu, weather permitting. From Skardu, we travel by jeep through Shigar Valley and the remote Braldu River Valley to Askole, the traditional starting point for the trek.
From Askole, the trail follows the route towards the Baltoro Glacier, passing spectacular mountain scenery and remote camping sites such as Jhola, Paiju, Urdukas and Goro II. As we progress deeper into the Karakoram, the towering peaks of Trango Towers, Masherbrum, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrum group dominate the horizon.
One of the major highlights is Concordia, where the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet beneath an extraordinary collection of high mountain peaks. Often described as one of the world’s great mountain viewpoints, Concordia provides an unforgettable setting for admiring the immense scale of the Karakoram.
From Concordia, we continue towards K2 Base Camp, situated at approximately 5,100–5,150 metres above sea level, depending on the precise location and route conditions. Standing beneath the immense slopes of K2 is a remarkable experience for trekkers who have dreamed of visiting this legendary mountain.
The K2 Base Camp Trek is more than a mountain hike. It is an expedition-style journey through a remote landscape where glaciers, rocky moraines, towering granite peaks and high-altitude camps create an experience unlike conventional trekking holidays.
During the trek, you can enjoy:
The K2 Base Camp Trek is a challenging, non-technical trekking adventure that requires good physical fitness, preparation and the ability to walk for several hours a day over uneven mountain terrain. Much of the route involves rocky trails and glacier moraine, with nights spent in tents at increasingly high altitudes. Previous multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended.
The complete journey generally takes around 18–22 days from Islamabad, depending on the itinerary, acclimatization requirements and contingency arrangements. The main trekking season is from mid-June to mid-September, with July and August being particularly popular months.
Trekkers should be prepared for cold nights, changing weather, limited facilities and the physical demands of sustained high-altitude walking. An experienced guide, appropriate equipment, gradual acclimatization and a well-organized support team are essential parts of the experience.
At Machulo Treks & Tours Pakistan (MTTP), we specialize in trekking and adventure travel across Baltistan and the greater Karakoram region. As a locally based tour operator, we bring regional knowledge, experienced trekking staff and practical mountain logistics to every journey.
Our K2 Base Camp Trek packages can include transportation, accommodation, camping equipment, meals, guides, porters and other trekking support, according to the selected itinerary and package inclusions.
